My lone male red phase. If I could only find a female.

I know that "red phase" hogs are very popular, but I am seeing an overextention of the red phase label. If you look at the iris color, you can clearly see that it is brown. The problem is that the color of the eye is the same as the color of the scales... brown! I agree that there is a spectacular contrast, and certainly more appealing that just a normal colored hog, but these days you can't tell what people have done in post processing.

Even if I disagree with calling this hognose "red", I will admit to the photos being very nice, and worth framing.

I agree half the time, most "red phase" labelled hogs are indeed brown and not worth calling red. Mine however is very red. Especially if you compare him side by side with a normal light brown snake. Even my boyfriend, who isn't a snake keeper, agrees that he is very red. LOL. Its his favorite out of my collection. I mean, I don't believe they are literally RED as in, crayola red. But nice red hogs are indeed a dark burnt red color.

I am glad that you saw my point and didn't get offended. If you get a chance sometime, find a "normal" western and take pics of them side by side and post here. THAT would be very helpful.

Hey no prob. You weren't rude about your questioning, just logical so I had no need to be offended. I agree for the most part. Alot of people mislabel anything "different", IE ball pythons. heh. But here's a few old photos I dug up of my original trio when they were younger. I regret selling the other two. Should of kept them. These are really poor as far as color goes, were taken with flash on my older camera. One was a nice yellow-phase, with a yellow checkered belly and nice yellow wash, one was just a normal and the red male I still have today.

Red and Dusty Yellow phase

Trio of them together. Normal, Red, Yellow.

I think you should breed him into an albino line, his coloration would make exceptional redder looking albinos then a normal hog, that's why you see some brighter colored albinos, the background color of the snakes changes the appearence of the albinos coloration, I remember you from the retic forum quite a few years back

Yeah I think so too. Too bad I can't get someone to loan me a female. LOL. I'm too poor to afford an albino, let along an adult breeding female.

Yeah, thats me. Haven't been around kingsnake much the past couple years...

and would have no problem labeling it a red. I would love to see a belly shot. That would be helpful. As far as finding a mate, too bad you were not looking last year. I split up my breeding group and sold a nice female. Nice, a good start for a red project but not an extreme or perfect red. Just nice.

I do agree with the comment about reds. Many are labeled as a red and are just brown. People are extending the red phase into normal browns but also, we may be extending the criteria/look a little in the other direction as well. Meaning that unless it looks like one of Caseys' hypos, it's not a red. His are extreme and even his ad says they may be a type of albino. Wish I had a pair from him but their too pricey for me. Thinking about hets.
Just another opinion, another point of view.
