Habitat Questions

I live on Oahu, Hawaii and just moved into a new neighborhood. Last week I was driving home when I saw what I took to be a bright green piece of leaf or plastic, about 5-6 inches long, haltingly blowing across the street. Thankfully I slowed down to get a closer look and realized it was a Jackson's chameleon frantically crossing the hot pavement. This was only two houses away from mine, and I've been kicking myself ever since for not going back and getting him to release into the lush bamboo in my yard. I don't want a pet, although I do have experience with reptiles. My question is this: Now that I know that my area is habitat, how can I get chameleons to come around? I have a small pond in the backyard I want to landscape, what kind of plants / bushes can I get to encourage chameleons? If I had caught the one I almost crushed, would he have liked being released into the dense bamboo? I'm tempted to go shine a light around and see if any are in there right now! I'd love for the chameleons to have a place to go after running (sort of running, I guess) across the road and evading the many dogs, kids, lawnmowers, and the like around here. Thoughts? Hi, by the way; I'm new on this forum, I'm usually more of a fish and ponds guy, never had a chameleon.

Your best bet would be to relocate them to your yard.

All this info has been great, I read the articles and checked out the sites. These are really cool creatures. Judging from the articles, my area is probably about perfect for them. If I see any more wanderers I'll be sure to grab 'em, although I wouldn't be suprised if there already are some in my yard. I'll keep my eyes peeled. Hopefully some will show up. This is really exciting to me, I'm from the midwest originally where we definitely don't get cool exotic stuff like chameleons showing up outside.
