Breeding Silkworms Help Needed!!!

charm_paradise May 19, 2003 09:29 PM

I have been growing silkworms from eggs to worms for all my panthers, and I decided I would save some of the larger ones, and let them cocoon and turn in to moths. I was not sure if the cocoons would hatch or not, and sure enough today they are. I have 50 cocoons that are hatching right now. Has anyone breed them? I know they don't fly or eat, just breed, females lay eggs and then they all die. My question is now that I have the moths, how long till they breed, and lay eggs? Also what is needed for the females to lay there eggs on? Right now they are in a cardboard box, with paper towel rolls on the bottom where the worms made there cocoons in. Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks

Just leave them where they are and they will breed almost instantly after they hatch. They only live a few days......enough time to breed and lay eggs and then they die. They will lay the eggs right in the box.

Paul-

Thanks, I just looked in the box, and sure enough they are already breeding, and they just hatched today. One more question, after they lay the eggs, how long untill the eggs hatch?

Thanks

I am very interested in this topic right now, as none of my cocoons have emerged & I live on the north pole where sending them will freeze them in winter. I've also had some pretty big dieoffs of small babies. Do you use a heat lamp for larger worms? I'd like to get it right, as I kind of like the buggers. I'm considering hornworms now, as they might be tougher? I hope you will get in touch with me! tkufahl@charter.net
