substrate recomendations?...

-ryan- Jun 17, 2006 11:55 AM

I have my ball python (who's roughly 24-30" right now) in his adult home now. He's been in it for roughly 2-3 months, and it didn't seem to have any effect on him as far as stress. It's a 4' neodesha slant front that I picked up used.

Right now he's on paper towels, because I had been using aspen but ended up with a mite infestation. I want something that looks okay, can hold humidity, and won't harbor parasites.

I was actually wondering if anyone has had any luck using bed-a-beast or a similar substrate, partially moistened? Or maybe a 'forest floor' style bedding? What about just plain old dirt?

Disposable Cage Liner (DCL) sold on K.S. or newspaper.

I used dirt for a while. Ended up with hard substrate and dirty snakes. They seem to like nosing through it. But it held moisture well. Now I have a 3 inch layer of bed-a-beast/'forest floor' over the dirt. This seems to keep the humidity high very well, and no dirty pythons!

I use newspaper(minus the colored pages)....Easy to clean...easy to see if any bugs ever show up...no problems with humidity(i do use really large water bowls though).
