Monitoring First Clutch Ever

DrBossk Jun 17, 2006 01:45 PM

My little girl laid 20 perfect eggs in her first clutch. In my inexperience, I didn't realize she had laid and probably didn't find the eggs for a good week plus. I was cleaning out one of the enclosures and found them. All looked just perfect. So I started incubating. I am not sure they are fertile though. They look great but I never actually saw an actual breeding. I am at work all day so I know it could have happened. I just don't know. They have been cooking for a few weeks now and only two have gone south (turned nasty yellow and deflated). All the rest still look like... eggs. I have candled a few just to see if anything was going on at the 'one month' point. But I have no clue what I am looking for. Is there any good method or clues to look for in a fertile egg? The eggs have weight, they are solid, white, and leathery. When candled they have a real dark area on the bottom (yolk sac I imagine) and the rest of the egg is translucent. Any help? Just curious. And anxious. And nervous. And confused. And excited.

Congrats on the hopefully fertile clutch. When candeling the eggs, you can usually identify the fertile eggs because they have tiny blood vessels running through the egg. If you see these, you should be in the clear. Hope this helps,
