A couple of folks think this guy has some nigra influence. These pics just don't capture the beauty, but at least you can see the remnant dorsal crossbars.

When I saw yours I immediately was thinking the same thing. I don't know the locality. I picked a pair up at a show in Pa. When I first posted a pic of the male mattbrock posted that he's seen some from western Mississippi that look identical.
Great looking Speckled. Alot of the nigras I see look like they have Speckled "influence" and vice versa esp from the eastern parts of their range. In the western part I've seen pics of Speckleds that look like they've got splendida in them.

I wouldn't use the presence or absence of crossbars for an identification tool in the holbrooki/nigra subspecies. The reasoning is because they both have them, and they are highly variable. We collect individuals well within the range of holbrooki that have absolutely no nigra influence that have very distinct crossbars. I have an Acadia, LA female with crossbars and few speckles in between. They are a highly plastic species and I think this falls well within their range of natural variation. All of the ones that have come from MS have had very distinct crossbars as well.
