Egg bound coxi?

Kayvon Jun 17, 2006 03:19 PM

Twenty-four hours ago my female coxi dropped a slug on the outside of her nest box. I have had many colubrids lay slugs away from the rest of the clutch either on the other side of the box or out of the box but always while she is laying the entire clutch. The coxi has not laid anymore eggs and still has some in her. At what point are they considered egg bound? Has anyone had any experience with an animal laying a slug and then waiting longer than 24 hours to lay the rest of the clutch? This is new to me so any thoughts anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Also, it has only been six days since she shed.

A few months ago I had one of my females lay a single bad egg and shed the next day. 11 days later she laid 4 good eggs, all of which hatched fine.

Thanks, that gives me hope. She still looks good with no swelling at the vent. She just looks gravid, but the bad egg and nothing else made me nervous, I have never had that happen before.

Is she obviously trying to push them out and have they moved down to the vent ready to be laid? when ive had egg bound snakes (albeit they were not coxi), they were obviously stressed and things were clearly amiss. the coxi i mentioned looked fine after she dropped the single bad egg. ive been told that if they lay eggs less than a week after they shed, they will probably not be good, and so far that seems to be true for my coxi too. i have another female 6 days post shed now and she still looks like it will be another several days before she lays. good luck.

My taiwan and my everglades both drop slugs up to 10 days or so before they actually lay the clutch proper.

She laid two full size eggs last night in the nest box and has no more eggs in her. The eggs are fertile but don't look very good. The shells look as though there isn't enough calcium in them. I have had young cornsnakes that laid eggs with shells that look like these that hatched so I will keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for the posts.
