Future of the Jaguar???

Will Leary Aug 01, 2003 10:29 AM

With all the excitement surrounding the latest Jaguar discovers (which have created more questions than answers), I now believe that it's entirely possible for the Jaguar gene('s?) to bring forth not only Hypos, Red Hypos, Bananas, Leucistics, ect., ....but also *Albinos. IMHO, there are obviously multiple and complex genes at work here, and as I have said in the past, I still don't think we've scratched the surface. What I believe to be even more exciting is the "possibility" of a Jaguar popping out with multiple visible traits (Paradox of sorts), such as Leucism AND Albinism displayed simultaneously in one animal (perhaps an Albino Jaguar with Piebald patches, *AND one pink eye and one blue eye!). Impossible?

A few months back there was a guy at the Orlando F.I.R.E. Expo who had some turtles on his table that absolutely astonished me. He had one Albino Red-Eared Slider with pure white patches (Piebald) and two different colored eyes (one pink and one blue). He also had a few siblings that were the same body style (Albino & Pied) but both eyes had blue (Leucistic) irises and pink (Albino) pupils! I never would have believed it, yet there it was right in front of me. A combo of Albinism & Leucism displayed in one animal. It was fantastic. Is such a thing possible with a snake, ...the Jaguar in particular? I don't see why not. Just some food for thought.

Will, like you said, the Jag potential is through the roof. What about ghost jags? This has to be the most exciting project right now in the snake community. Bo

The Ghosts seem to have a very promising future as well. I hope to be able to produce some this breeding season, so I will keep you updated.

P.S.
The IJC color fluctuation could indeed be due to heat absorption in the winter months. Sorry I was unable to respond to your question on the other forum!

Live in Phila,....I think I might miss it. But I think you should post some pics here anyways

I won't be going either....Yeah, Cori please post pictures of what you're refering to. If you could get them up after Daytona(sp?) for those who won't be able to attend, that would be great! I think the entire Carpet forum is dying to see what you have this time...

Why do you think that the jag line will throw albinos? This makes absolutely no sense to me unless you know something I don't. Also, wouldn't a leucistic albino just be a leucistic with red eyes, like in leucistic albino TX rat snakes?

The very nature of the Jaguar gene is so versatile that it seems almost anything is possible. Who would have honestly thought that a Jaguar could produce a Leucistic? On the face of it, that sounds absurd. In fact, I know several people that were quite skeptical of Jan Erics Leucistic pics until Henric recently posted pics of the four that he produced. Regarding the Leucistic Albino; depending upon how (or if) the two genes meshed, it could either be an orange and yellow patterned Carpet with pure white (Pied) blotches and either blue or pink eyes (like the turtles I saw), ....or it could be a pure white snake with pink eyes. All speculation of course, but sometimes it makes for good conversation.
