Interested in getting a monitor

Artmeis Aug 01, 2003 10:31 AM

Hey i'm interested in getting a montitor but i'm not sure what kind. I hear that sav's are good. Any other recommendations? I also own a water dragon, armadillo lizard and a collared lizard. And i was thinking of selling these guys if a get a monitor though because it will probably take up all my attention.

You might want to try an Ackie. They cost more than a sav,but eat less and you won't need a giant cage to house them.Read up on anything before you make a decision.

you want a larger monitor. Blackthroats are great monitors. I'm sure BRG and some others could agree with me on that. They get big, and eat a lot, and you can guess what comes after that . They also require a lot of space. What you get though, is a large ~6ft, up to 40lbs. of very approachable lizard (provided that you handle them from being young and continue to throughout their life). If your up to the challenge, do your homework and give blackthroats a look. Just to give you an idea of how fast they grow, here is a pic of mine when he was 9 months old.

..yes, they are my favorite larger monitor, out of all the large lizards that I keep, they are the most laid back as adults....without handling often, I never handle my animals, only to clean, and feed, and maintain the enclosure, they are pretty aggressive feeders though, if you can provide the space, and their requirements, I highly recomend them...

If you want to get a large monitor, get a blackthroat, if you want a small one get an ackie. enough said.

This is Sobek she is a BT/WT cross, she was 4ft 10in at a year old alone, shes now 5ft 8in at 21 months old. If you can provide them with larger and larger and progressively larger cages all of the time then an Albig can be a great choice. Maybe its me but Ive been keeping them for many years and still learning constantly from and about them.
Best all around as I can agree with is the Ackie as I recently got one and they are great captives, and are all captive bred. Albigs as captive bred are rare and with exceptions FRs banded WTs, ProExotics captive bred and born BTs, and Dan Turners CBB BTs.

Small, attitude, friendly, energetic, brave etc. Save some money to buy one, but you will save much more down the road buying one, over larger monitors.
