various insects as feeders for variety

gjensen Jun 17, 2006 06:28 PM

Any warnings against tomatoe hornworms, grubs (white), junebugs, as feeders for various lizards? Not as a ration, but an occasional supplement.

Tomato hornworms-make sure that they are reared on the non-toxic synthetic diet for Manduca sp.. I've heard that some will eat bell-peppers, but have not tried it. Leaves of tomatoes & bell-peppers are toxic-(Nightshade family-Solanaceae).

Grubs/June bugs-make sure that the source is pesticide-free.

Due to uncertainty, this is the reason most herpers buy or raise their own insects/invertebrates.

YES!!!!! Do not feed any horn worms that just came off the tomatoe vine. I keep chameleons and a source called 'chameleon Journals' has a section that talked about the use of horn worms as food. The worm when eating tomatoes is toxic. It has to be fed on other produce for sometime before feeding to a lizard.
