Hi. As ball pythons age do the spurs develop or are they noticable upon hatching? I have a young BP i'm unsure of, he appears to be male but...i could be wrong.
I understand that this is less reliable than probing but i don't have anyone competent near me that i am aware of to teach me how to safely probe snakes.

you can not tell the sex of a snake by the spurs, both males and females have them, no difference.

Females usually have smaller less curved spurs. But this is a very bad indicator of sex. However if you find one without spurs it has a very high chance of being a female. That is how I get female boas and pythons. I go to chain pet stores with cheap imports and buy snakes that have no noticable spurs. It works pretty well, if not 100%
I had a 15yr old female that had larger spurs than any of my males, still don't have a male that is as predominant as she was in that departement.

male balls spurs are typicaly larger but not all the time.it is not a reliable way to sex a snake.popping or probing are the two true definites.check with local vets...there may be one who works on reptiles that would do it for you and or teach you how. good luck Lee
