Melanurus finally hatching...pics

bthacker Jun 18, 2006 04:01 PM

Well, I don't know if you all remember the controversial "cross breeding" of my Blacktails but the eggs are starting to hatch.....The male was the animal in question whether or not it was a pure blacktail. Lots of folks had their opinions and I was new to Dry's having been told that they were indeed BT's. The long anticipated arrival of the offspring from that breeding are starting to arrive......You tell me.....Blacktail or not? To me they are awesome regardless. I have since acquired a darker tailed male specimen(no question Black Tail) that will be breeding with the female next year, so the offspring may have even darker tails......By the way, a thank you to those folks for expressing their opinions with an open mind and not being rude and abrasive....also thanks for all the help from the Dry guys!!! It was most appreciated!

Here are some pics of the new hatchling. Unfortunately I lost a few eggs to splitting halfway into the incubation, I believe I had to much moisture in the medium. Also, there were three dead in egg. Hatching and pipping 103 days post-oviposition......at 76-78 degrees. If the rest hatch successfully I should have a 53%(8/15) hatch ratio which sucks..more pics to follow of the other pups .

Man these guys are huge at hatching and so dang cute too....

job..Congrats..Only comment, would be incubation temps seem about 2-3 degrees too low..Live and learn..Let's see what the other guys say about the temp..
As far as BT vs Browntail..It's a natural integrade and to me least, is not an "abomination"..They'll be nice animals especially if you can get them to eat easily!! Good luck..

nice brett! re: moisture content, i'll normally place my eggs in a small sterlite box on a damp paper towel w/ a small cup of water inside. the eggs stay dry but the air inside is nice & humid. works like a charm! just check in on them every so often. good luck w/ the feeding thing, chicken blood/fluid soaked pinks are practically irresistable but there will be 1 or 2 that will try your patience. have fun & thanks for the update......

Thanks. Have you ever tried pinks dipped in chicken egg yolk? I got that tip from Quetzal Dwyer in Costa Rica. He said that had worked for him in getting his going....

probably tried that brett, i tried any & everything i could think of including pounding my head against the wall. :>/ different things will work for different individuals but once they get started it's hard to believe they ever refused in the 1rst place! they'll be out every couple of days looking for more. for the slow learners, try assist feeding them. i got that tip from dean & it really fast fowarded everything quite nicely!

Thanks I appreciate it.....

Congratulations on producing more captive born Drymarchon for the captive population! Latest possible explanation I've heard for losing eggs is need for more than one male to breed with female for a higher fertility ratio. Why they die in the egg? I wish knew.

bthacker Jun 19, 2006 09:45 AM

All 15 eggs were fertile. Some of the dead in egg, the eggs collapsed, the yolk was hard and chunky. I had 3 more out this morning....

Good looking baby Black Tails.

Wish the cross band markings stayed with them.

More pictures please….
