Couldn't resist ... have to share some swimming photos of Mo...

veronicag Aug 01, 2003 11:24 AM

Mo is our beardie that has Yellow Fungus. She's been through numerous treatments for almost a year. Finally with Cheri Smith's help, she's slowly recovering from this disease that used to be fatal. Recently after viewing posts from several people that use kiddie pools for their beardies, I decided to get one and see what all of the fuss was about. (I think it was Reiko who first gave me the idea - Thanks girl!) I put Mo in the luke warm water and she took off swimming. I haven't seen her enjoy herself this much in a long long time! I had a hard time getting her out of the pool! It's great exercise and if anyone has access to pretty decent weather - I highly recommend one of these pools.

Here is Mo taking a break after 15 minutes of vigorous swimming!

And there she goes! Swimming and more swimming!

Shen she gets really tired from swimming, she will climb up on my leg and bask in the sun.

That's really cool. I got paid today and will make a run into town. Hopefully there will be some kiddy pools left.
Take care,
Karen

Looks like Mo was having a great time swimming. That's so good to hear that her fungus is getting under control. I know how hard it can be to rid them of it. I wish you luck with the treatments. Brings a smile to my face to see Mo having so much fun, and beating the fight with the fungus. Oh just wanted to make sure if you ever put another dragon in that pool to scrub and dissinfect the hell out of it. I have two of everything I won't chance any of my others coming in contact. I'm sure you know that already just wanted to remind you.

It's just good to see that she's starting to enjoy life again. There was a time, not that long ago, where I thought she was going to give up on me. I was really worried.

Actually, I have two of these great pools and one of them is all for Mo. But it still gets scrubbed down. I don't want her to continually be reintroduced to her own fungus when her body is trying so hard to get rid of it.

Flukers is who was selling to pet smart when I acquired the dragon I have with the fungus. It sounds to me like yours might also have it. I would treat the spots with Lamisil, it can be bought at a drug store it's for athletes feet. I would also try to give it some probiotics to help digestsion if it does have it internally it really screws with the digestive tract. Has your beardie been treated for coccidia? Has it grown, and ate normal throughout it life so far? The fungus has been dieing with the use of the lamisil. I wish you good luck. CheriS has lots of info on this fungus.

Mo was from Petsmart too. I had no idea that Flukers was the one that was selling the sick beardies to Petsmart. Has anyone contacted them? I doubt there is anything they an do, but they should know that the beardies they are raising are not healthy.

The link below is for the Yellow Fungus article that CheriS wrote. Someone was asking for more info on this fungus.

Yellow Fungus - Cause and Effects

CheriS Aug 01, 2003 05:27 PM

there was some serious problems. I talked to their vet directly last fall and exchanged many emails. To the best of my knowledge, they stopped selling bearded dragons several months ago. But we are still seeing a lot of fallout and continuing problems in the United States from those that made it into the courty and were sold by stores and dealers. They have infected entire colonies of dragons and put some breeders out of business.

At that time we only knew their dragons were loaded with parasites and many had Yellow Fungus Disease or developed it shortly after they were sold. We think we know know why it was coming up so often in their dragons now.

The way they kept them was an invitation to parasites and disease spread, plus the humidity in Central America was a breeding ground for bacteria and fungus. If anyone would like, they can email me and I will email back a picture of how their babies were kept and raised at their facility, I am not sure of the legal problems if I post on public forum a picture of their animals and "pens", but I can email them.

Just click on my name above to request it

Oh, she's cute. Mo used to look like that too. Are you doing the Nolvasan baths and applying the Lamasil all over?

I would check out www.reptileroom.com right in the middle of the page in green letters you'll see cause and affects of yellow fungus. CheriS and others on that site have pooled together info on it and have that treatment that has worked for me. I would watch since you have many dragons not to let that one interact with the others it is contagous. Good Luck.

I also wanted to tell you that this yellow fungus has been treated with success recently. In the past most people did not catch it until it was wide spread or the dragons immune, and digestive systems damaged with the recent use of antibiotics such as baytril a common used antibiotic, and Albon a common drug for coccidia infections. Today dragons are coming up with symptoms and with the lamisil and probiotics for treatment have been able to clear it externally (the yellow patches). With mine it has been cleared for almost 8 months now with no new patches showing on the scales. It did damage the scales on her leg though and that never really looked the same since. Good Luck

What Mattman says is absolutely correct. The article at www.reptilerooms.com about the Yellow Fungus is what I read. It answered most of my questions. CheriS, the author of the article, answered the other questions I had. She told me to bathe the beardie in Nolvasan solution (diluted 1 part Nolvasan to 20 parts water). You just soak the beardie in it for 10 minutes and be VERY careful not to get it in their eyes! It will sting and could cause severe eye problems. After a few minutes in the bath, get a soft toothbrush and start to brush the beardie in the direction of the scales. Some of the dead scales will come off. That's what the Nolvasan does, it removes the dead scales so you can get the Lamasil directly onto the fungus. Rinse her off after 10 minutes. Don't be alarmed if a lot of dead scales come off. They were dead already and would've eventually come off. When she's dry, get some Lamasil cream or liquid (liquid works best) and apply it EVERYWHERE you see even the slightest hint of yellow or where dead scales came off. Continue the Nolvasan baths everyday until all of the dead scales have come off. And continue applying the Lamasil everyday until all signs of yellow go away. This could take a really long time though. Beardies are cold blooded and their bodies don't work as fast as ours do when healing. I had to bathe Mo for a week straight and I have been applying the Lamasil every evening before her bedtime for the last 2 weeks. I have noticed a lot of improvement. The longer you wait, the worse it gets.

Also, if you're not already doing so, it wouldn't hurt to get her on some probiotics.

Good luck and keep us posted. I would love to see photos if you have them. I'm going to be making a page on my website that is all dedicated to Yellow Fungus. So any info you give me on how the treatment is going with your beardie will be helpful.

Thanks!

Looks like she is a very happy dragon at the moment!

I am sorry to hear that she has yellow fungus - but it was great news to hear that she is recovering well.
