Gecko sheds once a week, need some help.

gilberysgeckos Jun 19, 2006 05:44 AM

Hi all, one of my females has been shedding almost every week for some time now. She has a problem with short sight and doesn't manage to catch many crix so i've been feeding her anything she can catch i.e mealworms and butter worms. Was wondering if any one could help me understand why she sheds once a week. She also has problems actually getting all her shedding off and normally ends up me helping her with a cotton stick. All my other geckos are fine just this one girl. Thanks in advance all.

A couple of my geckos seem to be excessively shedding lately too. It got bad where the shed skin wouldn't come off even with daily soaking. Their eyes got an infection from it. The vet has me soaking them twice a day when they get ready to shed and using an eye lubricant to get the shed off once it looks like it is ready. Actually a lot of geckos in my area seem to have this problem. I work at a petstore and many people have called with the same problem and my vet says she has seen a lot of geckos with this problem in the last month. The main thing I can think of is either the goofy weather pattern this year here has stressed them some how or something is in the water that some of them are sensitive to. Or maybe some kind of parasite, however if it was a parasite i would think all my geckos would be affected.
