Progress...........Dial Up Warning

kjanda Jun 19, 2006 02:24 PM

Just though I would drop in and post some progress on a few current projects I'm working on (mostly finished). The large cages are for burms and retics (all over 12'). The rack is a simple design we used to run this little rack to see if we liked it. We do and will be building one twice this size in the next coming months.

Likes, dislikes, questions?

Very nice lookin habitat. The inside looks very nice also. I'm planning on doing the linoleum also, a lot of work but well worth it in the end. Thanks for the pics, this re-enforces that fact.

How did you get the color of the outside wood ? Is it a stain or some kinda laminate wood ?

Also ... I'm in the planning stage of building a new Hab ( my first build ) for my 7.5 Ft Boa. I want to use glass bypass windows for the front but I've been struggling with how to set up that part. It looks to me that you're going to use that same kinda window so did you just add another piece of wood along the bottom of the frame or ???

and routed out a 1/2" or 3/4" channel in a 2" x 4" to get the channel I wanted. I also made the same channel on the top piece of the frame but much deeper in order to have the room to move my 1/4" plexiglass up to remove if required. The piece of "stabalizing" wood in the center is a mere 2" x 2" that is on the front half of the 2" x 4" basically on the outside of the "sliding" glass area.

I agree with the linolium on the complete interior, but I do promise, it is alot of work. It took us (me and my darling sweetheart) 2 full days of glueing that stuff on to all interior parts (this was for 2 different cages though). 1 day for the frame work (as some of them were 8' long and only 2" wide) and a full day for the flat plywood sheets (including cutting them to fit). It was a challenge indeed but I think it will be worth it in the long run as well.

Thanks

sorry bout that. I used simple semi-gloss water based latex paint. My sweetheart had Wal-Mart mix the color and we just painted it and let it sit for several days to "offgas" which with this stuff, it is on the outside so I wasn't to worried. The color is basically for beauty. My job is to make things work, it is her job to make things look pretty. There shouldn't be any moisture on the outside of the tank or on the small tables we biuld for them as well so we didn't want anything more complex than the water based latex paint. I build (2) cages last year with a stain poly combination applied to them and they are still sitting in my warehouse "offgasing" because they can not be used until they don't smell anymore. That was an expensive lesson to learn! And it sucked!!!!!!

Hi
I was wondering where you got your watering components for your Rat/Mouse rack? Can you post some infomation on them? Is this going to be a gravity fed system or tied into a line?

Thanks,

Ian

I have one concern regarding cage depth with a Burm or Retic with that deep a cage you will have to get in the cage for cleaning and with such a short cage I feel you are risking yourself in the process.

Second I built my rat racks siilar to yours but perfer them width wise to your length wise. I find you can get more in the same amount of space just a tip not a concern.

Good Luck

We thought about that, it "looks" like it is very deep and truly is but not as bad as the pictures make it seem. We do expect to climb in to clean but when we do the "climb in" type cleaning, the snakes will not be in the cages. On the racks, I had thought about going width wise as well, we may actually incorporate that into the next design for the real rack. This one was just to see how it would work.

Thanks Jeremy for your response.

BTW, the entire inside of the cages are cover by linolium or vinyl (spelling?), even the frame. That was fun!!!
