Scrub, Carpet Hybrids

P_Reticulatus Jun 19, 2006 03:51 PM

Has anyone ever heard of such a thing. I found a photograph of one on a google search, but is it even possible? What are your thoughts?

A breeder here in canada, Mardy McManus, recently hatched out some of that particular cross. The babies are pretty unique looking.

I believe that cross to be possible, most python species in my opinion can be hybridized, if they mate successfully at the correct time in their breeding cycles.

...not a hybrid in this case.

Does that mean you consider scrub pythons and carpets to be the same species?

If they can make viable, fertile offspring aren’t they the same species by definition? I don’t know. Food for thought…

Fortunately that's no longer the accepted hard-line definition of species. Morphology, behavior, and breeding are out the window; in with DNA and genetics. Womas and carpets can produce babies, though admittedly it's yet unknown whether they're viable. Assuming they are, you would consider them the same species? Even if they aren't viable, retic and burm hybrids certainly are, yet they are definitely not the same species either.

Do you have pictures of that unholy combination? I would love to see it!

What is the accepted hard-line definition of species?
