Where you can collect them? I thought I had heard at one time there were some areas around the base of the mtn. where one could collect them.

Good looking chuck.

JOhn-mine is from Tom Greb stock (CB), and I am under the impression they are all protected inside or outside the park, I can ask on the AHA forum and get back an answer pretty short. I also just recently heard of another one in the area that has all red legs and tail? Anyone heard of this?

JOhn without getting into detail- both Randy and I are stoked about an area we found south west of Uvalde City and the terrian takes an immediate change with rocks and thron scrub matching the terrian retics are often found in, the good news is that I have permission to enter two ranches there plus we are also getting permission from and asphalt company in the area that all have large parcels of land. We believe that if there are are any retics in Uvalde COunty they will be here. Our last outing we observed a baby Berlander's Tortise (protected) a Texas Earles Lizard, several spineys, and I haven't observed any horned lizards they are just not showing in the area in any numbers this year, so looking over what we found in the rain at 74 degrees looks like a good day might bring out some retics. The area we want to research is within the Ranches land and not out where we were. I have also solicited the help of a local in the area that has photo's on the interent to also help with photography if and when we do find them, we are gong out this Friday will keep you appriased if we find anything..Cheers!!!

John here is the response I recieved from Jerry on the AHA forum--
South Mountain. The majority of South Mountain is a City of Phoenix Park and capture of any animal, reptiles included, within the park is illegal. There are several areas which are on SM but not within the park and as such, with proper permits/licenses, one may capture animals. However, Arizona law states that native reptiles may not be sold. Directly to the south of SM is an Indian reservation. There is a rather narrow area between the park and homes and the res and, in the proper habitat, Chuckwallas may be taken. If you are caught on the res, you come under Indian Law and your civil rights may be quite different from those in the "United States." Should you get caught poaching lizards on the res and you have your vehicle there, said vehicle may be impounded and taken from you by the Indian government and you have no recourse.

There is an article in the March, 2006, issue of Arizona Highways on the South Mountain chucks and why the males have red tails. Your library may have it.

I have a young female that was given to me by my son in Az ( kids can't charge parents for lizards ) that was caught within 20 yrds of someones back yard right on Pecos (street/ drive--I forget). I did see a large redtail male on a small outcropping just inside the Indian Reservation but knew better than even go there. There are only a few outcrops of rock in a narrow strip between the subdivisions and the reservation west of I-10. Pecos Rd runs in between the reservation and the subdivision that is built right up to the Game Preserve boundary of South Mnt. Several years ago you could drive further west on Pecos and get to a nice outcrop of rock just on the south side of SM but outside the preserve but that road is closed off and probably has houses on it by now.
I was in Phoenix last Christmas & made it to the main part of SM--no chucks could be seen even though it was sunny & warm)-- and got a "talkin to" by a park ranger for getting off the marked trail as I was looking at fire damage & regrowth. He chewed on me a little ( it did not hurt much ) & then we got to talking redtails & stuff. He said he had heard of Tom Greb & Richard Montinucci (sp??) before. It never hurts to drop names of important people when in a jam!!!
