How do snakes get mites?

kitten6500 Jun 19, 2006 05:28 PM

What are all the ways for ball pythons to get mites? If you bring a snake into your collection that has mites then you obviously run the risk of a mite infestation but are there other ways for mites to enter into your home? Can rats or any other animal(dogs, cats, birds) carry mites?

Finally, where do the mites originate from (besides unsanitary breeders)? Africa?

Thanks for your time!

Not to pick nits (mites?) but this info is not correct. The common snake mite, Ophionyssus natricis is actually native to Africa. And although the mites are usually transmitted from one snake to another, they can survive on mulch, wood and other cage furnishings/substrates and be brought into a collection that way.
