beardie with appetite problem

jcgecko Aug 01, 2003 12:13 PM

Hey i recently received a blood male from dragons den who is approximatley months old. hes is a healthy little bugger and pretty active but he doesn't seem to eat much. His fecal looks good nothing im worried about but every time i throw in crix im lucky if he eats 5 or 6 i throw in greens and stuff and hell eat it every now and then but not a ton. He isn't skinny but he also isn't pleasantly plump so today i decided to use a babyfood/gatorade/jump start/ supplement sollution to get him eating again since that has worked on geckos for me who were "off food". Any way 35 cc later of the stuff hes sunning himself on the rock he chugged the stuff so quick i am afraid to give him anymore. Im hoping the jump start will give his appetite a quick in the pants. Does anyone else have any ideas on how to get him eating a ton. Ps he has correct setup with perfect temps that are checked constantly. Thanks.

Jason

I know you said that the temps are right, but maybe try raising it a by a few degrees. Every beardie is different and some prefer lower temps while others prefer their temps higher.

Has the beardie been on any antibiotics lately? If so, *maybe* too much of good bacteria got destroyed also. You can get probiotics, the good bacteria, by sprinkling some NutriBAC (nutribac.com) on its food/prey or feed the beardie with something that contains acidophilus, like yogurt. NutriBAC has been around a while and it is specially formulated for reptiles to replace their gut flora... no, I'm not affiliated with the company at all. LOL.

i've had him for approximatly 2 weeks but i made several changes to his set up in the first week and im afraid he may be a little stressed out still, he stil runs from me when i open cage and stuff like that and won't eat if im watching.

thats probably yuor biggest issue then, he just taking time to settle in, getting a fecal check is still a good idea to rule out parasites, but i also would give him time to kinda get used to things, its common for a dragon when they move to a new home to have a decreased appetite, im sure he will come around
