Question about Calci-sand use...

pspguy Aug 01, 2003 12:18 PM

It is my understanding that the reason Calci-Sand or Vita Sand, or whatever other type you choose to use is made to go through if eaten, why is everyone having a fit because there is sand in the stool.. thats what it is supposed to do. Thats the difference in it and the course or playground sand... I agree it should be watched carefully to make sure it is indeed passing through, but from the books I've read on the subject matter, a portion of that happening is natural...I just dont get it.

its giving them an unmeasured dosage of calcium. it would be like you just dumping vitamins on there food without measuring it...to much is worse than too little. besides, they put dyes in the sand which i cant see how that can be good for any herps. like the glow in the dark stuff... do u know what usually makes stuff glow in the dark?? phosphorous if i remember chemistry class correctly. insectivors arent supposed to have a lot of phosphorous yet ppl use the glow in the dark calci sand and stuff...usually for leos too.

just my 2 cents though.

All very valid points, especially about the glow in the dark stuff, which is why I choose to use only white.. I was just curious =)

The reason I took my male off of his is because that there was a large amount in his stool. I worry about him eating to much when he is after his crickets and so forth and getting impacted. I rather not have an impaction problem then having to deal with one and worse loose me leo. I thought by just using it between the tiles that he wouldnt really get any but he did he got a lot. Its all just personal prefernce when it comes down to eat. I also believe that the white sand most have color added to eat because how often to you see pure white sand at the coast or the desert? Just my opinon though
