question about leucistic black rats....

FrankR Jun 20, 2006 06:26 AM

Is this anomaly "borrowed" by texas rat snake genes or did someone get a gene from somewhere else, please elaborate, I keep a small group of leucistic texas rats and was just wondering aloud.

There's been quite a few discussions on this topic in this forum. I know someone who caught a lucy black rat in Ohio around 15 years ago. He bred it to normals, got hets, and made more lucys. The problem with this is that I don't think it's possible to prove if a lucy rat is a Texas, black, or cross of the two. It would seem likely that at least some people have crossed the two snakes as a "shortcut."

Thanks for the info on the "original" lucy black rat, to be honest I wouldn't be able to tell the difference from a lucy black and lucy texas rat snake by looking at them, I recently purchased a lavender texas rat snake, very nice animal, from mark bell stock, after some research I have found this animal to be "pure" texas rat snake, I plan on breeding it into my lucy line. But since the "lavender" is a neonate that's a long ways off project, but keeps me happy lol.
