Gnats in vivarium

herrigan Jun 20, 2006 02:21 PM

I have a problem with gnats in my tanks. I am using Eco-earth (which I've heard sometimes attracts gnats)and I have changed it with the gnats returning soon after. They are annoying to my frogs and toads (and us as well-we've even had some upstairs). They don't hurt the guys, they just land on them and fly around them.
Any thing I can do to get rid of them? I've hung fly traps closeby and they just fill up with no noticeable change in gnat population. Is there some sort of environmentally-safe product I can use that won't hurt my frogs, or should I just keep swatting?

I had an experience similar with small white bugs in my frog's bedding. I figured that the insects will use the warmest area of the bedding to multiply or at least to store eggs. So I monitored the bedding near the heatpad and sure enough that's where alot of the small white bugs were. I took a clump of the bedding and isolated it in a plastic bag and just left it outside. The number of small white bugs went down to nearly none being seen.

Also I think a remedy which you can use is taking the bedding and nuking it in the microwave (make sure you have water) for 2 minutes tops with careful observation to make sure the water just reaches boiling point but that's about it. Don't seal the container with the bedding. Or you can even put a pot half full with water to boil on the stove and then add some small amounts of bedding till it is just pretty much all bedding. Just make sure to keep on stirring so the bedding doesn't burn. Wait till it cools and then put it back in the terrarium.

Thanks so much. I'll try the microwave procedure and see what works.
