Black Milk Owners...

...What substrate are you using. I switched to paper but I think I and going back to a substrate that can be kept a little moist for added humidity. Suggestions or comments welcomed.

Thanks,
Miller

I used cypress for a while, went to aspen and now they seem to be hanging out in or near there water bowl more so I guess they really like the humidity cypress can give them...I will probably go back to it because all my snakes seem to like it more, it holds moisture well, looks very natural, and does not get moldy...I have ball pythons, boas, kings, and hondurans (along with the black milks) and with the only exception being the Cal kings (they like it dryer) all the others love it.

I have always used news paper and never had a problem.

I use newspaper too. Aspen looks real nice and I used it for a lot of years and spot cleaning in a big cage seemed easy.Even after you spot clean real well, when you do your big overall complete cage cleaning you'd be surprised at how much trace crud is in there. In a box it's nicer because you dump the whole thing out anyway.A lot less dust in my cellar now and no lingering odors. When theres a mess I go straight to the cage and deal with it in seconds. The Barkers liked it a lot.I think that some snakes treat it like being covered under leaves and during a shed I just spray a corner near the heat to rais humidity. I also keep containers in the hides with spaghnum moss to make the Gaigeae happy when needed. While it doesn't score points for good looks there is a certain nice feeeling about walking past a clean neat newspapered cage. Like when you finish mowing the lawn, doing all your yard work, mopping the kitchen floor, finishing all the laundry.......lol

Well Bob I am still trying to find the joy in those task you listed! lol My milk just got back form the vet, He picked up something from a wild caught while being baby sat while i was in India. Now he is soaking in his water dish which is concerning because he has no suplimental heat. My room temp is not above 75 degrees. Regurge and runny stole had me very concerned. Once all that goes away I will probably put him on coconut bark or something. He just seemed happier when he had higher humidity
