New monitor owner with question.

bravo39 Aug 01, 2003 12:51 PM

Ive had a baby sav for a little over three weeks. The sav is around 6 1/2inches. Ive tried two substrates Aspen bedding and dirt. I think im going to go back to the aspen bedding it looss better and its cleaner. My question is I feed it 1 pinky every other day along with 4 -5 large crickets a day is this too much too little or about right? Any thing more than 4-5 crickets he ignores but i assume its because im feeding it a pinky every other day.
Thanks Bravo

Sounds about right. The pinkie probably fills it up more so it can't eat as many crickets.Make sure you use a vitamin/calcium supplement too.Watch out that the aspen bedding doesn't cause it to sneeze from the dustDirt is better for it.

Sounds like it's not eating to it's full potential, I know everyone's is different and that may be normal for your sav. Just a word though, chech your temps and keep them high. This will result in a more active and hungrier sav . I had a hatchling that ate in the neighborhood of 25-30 5 week old crickets. But, then again I didn't feed pinkies. Just something you might want to check. I know a guy who manages to keep his sav at about 16-18 inches and it's almost two years old. I've told him to up his temps, but he doesn't listen. Just thought I'd throw that out.
Good luck,
Tim

That's just plain cruel.I've never had one of these super growing monitors like some people, but they end up at a normal sizeMy female Sav was 34" at 18 months old and stayed there. That's normal

it sickens me to see it like that, it never moves and hardly ever eats, when it does it's small amounts. Some people just don't need the responsibility of caring for a captive lizard!!

Oh, and an akie in that kind of shape wouldn't be far off from Christine's we saw a few days ago . Sorry Christine.

You should give him $20 and take it from him.I know people who think my monitors are cool but they never want one when I tell them all about them. That's good, with people that can't take care of themselvesTell him I'll give him $30 for it

I have offered to take it, and pay a little, but he says he still likes him/her. I need to hire a burgler...LOL
I know what you mean.

Thanks for the answers BRG and Timbo.
Timbo you asked about my heat. Cool side 80-85 hot side 95-100 and basking surface is 130 under a 45 watt flood bulb. Ive had reptiles before, never a monitor I just now what ive read about them. Danniel Bennets new book seems to be the most informitive. The sav is only 5 weeks and seems very active and look healthy and its small but round. Also the crickets im feeding him are real big maybe thats why he doesnt eat as many. I will put pics up as soon as I figure out how. As for creeps I dont know what your reply was intended to mean. I appears you were being sarcastic. If you were there is no reason for it. The reason for this forum is to ask questions stupid or not. Sarcastic people only make people not ask when they should ask.
Thanks Bravo

I also have a "stunted" savannah. He was given to me by a kid that had him for 3 years, kept in a 55 gallon tank, and fed 1-2 mice a week. He's just under 2 feet right now. I increased his feedings and moved him into a bigger cage. He's put on some weight but not any more length in the past 8 months. So I'm not sure if he's going to grow anymore, but we'll wait and see I guess.

I dont think mine is stunted its only a little over a month old.

"Ive had a baby sav for a little over three weeks. The sav is around 6 1/2inches. Ive tried two substrates Aspen bedding and dirt. I think im going to go back to the aspen bedding it looss better and its cleaner."

You are basing your decision on what YOU want. YOU want the substrate to "looss" better (whatever that means), and want it to be easier for YOU to clean.

What does the Sav want? How do you know?

"My question is I feed it 1 pinky every other day along with 4 -5 large crickets a day is this too much too little or about right?"

Your answer is:

"Any thing more than 4-5 crickets he ignores but i assume its because im feeding it a pinky every other day."
