Humbling Deformed Albino Hatchling!

muddoc Jun 20, 2006 07:50 PM

Well, first off the odds Gods threw me a curve ball, and only gave me 1 Albino out of 7 eggs. One egg went bad after two weeks of incubation. So the results were one Albino out of 6 viable eggs. This breeding was from an Albino male to a Het. Albino female. Odds say I should have gotten 3 Albinos. Well, I was at least happy with hatching one, especially since this was the first morph that was going to hatch at our facility. As some of you know, I work offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, and won't be home until Thursday. My wife is kind enough to send me pics of major happenings in the snake room while I am at work. When I called her this morning, she had bad news for me. The pic below will help explain it. As of right now, the Albino is still alive, but is only half out of the egg. Talk about a kick in the Jewels. Hopefully I got all of my bad luck out of the way for this season. I know in the pic, the one thing you cannot see is that it is missing it's right eye all together. Sometimes breeding snakes can be very humbling. I know we see alot of great things, but this is a reminder that with the good comes the bad. Here is the pic.

Thanks for letting me get that of my chest,

I am SOOOOOOOO sorry,I hope if that baby stays alive it can keep quality of life if not you should have it put down correctly,NOT BY THE FREEZER method as we heard so many times about the derma ball.that still makes me sick thinking about that.I hope the BP gods are kinder next time

pfan151 Jun 20, 2006 09:32 PM

Sorry to see that, I would put her down when you get home if she is still alive. There is no way that snake can live a normal life. Also what happened to the derma that was mentioned in the previous response?

I'm truely sorry this has happened. It is a risk we all take though. I pray things will go better for you in the future.

if its still alive, out of the egg? and at all active, i would 'consider' seeing how it goes through its first shed and attempt at first meal, that being said i cant tell from the picture the extent of its problems as far as the funtioning of the mouth ect...

muddoc Jun 20, 2006 11:54 PM

There is no way it could eat, as it has no jaws with which to eat with. It would have to be tube fed at best.

What happened?

muddoc Jun 20, 2006 11:51 PM

Well, my wife went back in to check on the Albino this evening, and it was dead still half in the egg. She cut the egg open and pulled the Albino out. I had asked her to sex it, because I was curious, and when she went to go try and sex it is when she discovered it dead. Here is the pic of it out of the egg. Hopefully, I have paid my dues to the ball Gods for the year with this clutch. I just wanted everybody to see that breeding balls can be as humbling as it can be exciting.

That's the pits but probably best for the snake. Here's hoping that the ball python gods smile down on you. BTW, are the other 5 hets doing OK?

That truly sucks. Especially for the little snake. Well, on the bright side, you know your het is a het (unless you already knew for sure). Good luck next time.

BTW, I'd say you more than paid your dues. An animal in this condition is cruel and sad. I hope it doesn't happen to anyone, ever.

i too have suffered this year. i had a clutch of yellowbelly eggs that looked odd from the begining. they all seemed to show signs of life and didnt mold or go bad. well last night my worst fears were recognized. 4 out of the five eggs pipped and are doing ok. the babies seem a little small but are ok. the fifth egg however was a true dissapointment. when i cut it since it didnt pip i discoverd one dead baby inside plus a half formed twin. to say the least i was upset but what can you do. i guess just keep on going and chalk it up to bad luck.
