got a temp gun THANK GOODNESS way to much heat!

MatPrice Aug 01, 2003 12:57 PM

i am glad i went out and got this temp gun the zoo med thermometer on a stick was in some cases almost 15 degrees off.

in my 29 gal i had 1 100 wat bulb over a tree limb and a raised piece of slate off the floor about 6 inchs the tree is maybe 10 inches from the bulb and read 132°

the slate witch is six inches off the floor read about 115

my leopard gecko cages are reading 100

the zoo med theromomter was giving readings of 105-110 directly under the basking site

off to home depot for some smaller wattage bulbs.

I am trying to get one but can't seem to find one that is less than $50. Are there any goods ones out there that are cheaper than that? If so, where should I look for one. I've tried Walmart and Radioshack without any luck. Is there a place on the internet?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Actually, LLL Reptiles does have a temp gun listed under thermometers and thermostats. Its also 35.00 without shipping. Looks just like the one from Pro Exotics.
Take care,
Karen

I got mine from Pro Exotics and love it. One cage was too low on temps. This one gives all the various temps on your basking spot. It comes with a battery installed and a spare. It's great. Total cost with shipping was 39.95. To me it was worth it. Hope that helps.
Take care,
Karen

you wonder how you did it before you had it.

My question before I go buy one, is do they measure both surface temperature AND air temp? I find it important to be able to measure both. Does anyone know the answer? Thanks, LM

I can't answer that question, but my guess would be not.
I still use my digital when I want ambient temps.
take care,

i can't see how because the beam has to be read by the machine.

but if the floor is 82 degrees you can be sure the air around it is pretty close to 82

MatPrice Aug 01, 2003 06:56 PM

your dragon is one of two places on a perch at a given height or on the floor for instance my dragon has a flat rock as baking area on that rock it's 110 so it is probably pretty safe to say that with in 4 inchs around that spot (probably more) the air temp is right around 110 maybe 112 or so but close enough not to make differance.

i mean the area right under the light is probably 200 degrees and the bulb BTW is around 300 neat what these guns can do, anywho see my point what does it matter what the temp is where your dragon issn't?

as long as the temp in the tank is correct at height that he is right ?

now if your dragons has areas of heights all over the tank thats where this thing comes in handy cause you can measure the exact temp of those area.

i hope i am making this understanable
