I found this guy in my shoe in the bedroom closet in my home at Tampa, FL this morning. It gave me quite the start at 6:45AM! What kind of snake is this? How could he get so far into the house? Thanks!

It's a water snake (nonvenomous). Looks like a young Florida banded water (Nerodia fasciata pictiventris), but I could be wrong.
It doesn't take a very big hole for a snake like this to make their way into your house. Just one of those things that happens. I know it was a big surprise, but nothing to be too worried about. These guys are not big rodent eaters to my knowledge, but here are a few things that can help you keep snakes away from your house. Get rid of rodents and their food sources. Move bird feeders away from your house. Remove debris that snakes can hide in. Keep the grass cut short.
Cheers
Thanks very much. Glad to hear that it's not venomous.
I'm in Tampa as well and yes, it is a juvenile FL watersnake.
Harmless but will bite if provoked often times.
