HELP WITH BABIES

boz8883 Jun 21, 2006 08:28 PM

hi. I obtained a wild caught garter. She gave birth to 18 babies today. How do I care for them? I tried offering them VERY tiny Rosie's (small fish). I fish are not too large for them to eat, they do not seem interested at all. Any help would be appreciated.

I've raised large constrictors before. This is a new experiance for me. Thanks a lot

You need to give them a few days to a week before they start eating. They will go thru a shed and then start to feed. Tiny rosies work good, also feeder guppies are small enough for them. Also, small worms are taken by most babies. Just keep an eye on them as they can munch each other trying to eat the same worm or fish.

Yeah also cut up worms slugs and dusted crickets should work good. But they probably won't eat till they all shed.

Garters don't eat insects....I have heard of themd oing it occasionally, but I tried that when I was in high school and foundout they couldn't digest the exoskeletons of the insects.

Most garter babies shed at birth, the rest within days of being born. Most of my babies ate within a day or two. None ate the first day. Good luck.

Go to the bait store and buy night crawlers. Chop them up into little pieces than feed them on a something without a high side on it such as a flat dish or just a piece of newspaper. Do not use trout worms or leaf worms. ( they are deadly to small snakes). Good luck
