Pyxis arachnoids (spider tort)

derrdiggs Jun 21, 2006 11:56 PM

I am considering adding a pair of spider tortoises to my family. I currently have two redfoot (cherryhead). I think the spider torts are beautiful and seem to require similar humidity requirements that my redfoots do. I have also read that these are difficult to keep. Is this true that they are hard to keep? I am fairly new to keeping tortoises and want any info anyone could offer.
Thanks
Derrick

Pyxis are very specialized tortoises, but once acclimated and once new keepers learn their quirks, they are easily kept. They offer a lot to the terrarium with their small adult size and beautiful appearance. Pyxis are by nature very shy and will not interact or behave like your redfoots. They have a quite peacefulness about them that some people find boring. I have most of my experience with Flat-tailed Torts (Pyxis planicauda), but I do maintain Pyxis arachnoides in similar conditions. Below is a link to my web page (in the making) about planicauda.

Hope this helps!

Your tortoises are beautiful! Fantastic markings. Had a look at the rest of your website too, and you've got a great set-up.
