This is what I come home to

medyssa Jun 22, 2006 01:06 AM

So after coming home to seven baby Brazilian Rainbow boas in my female's cage Sunday afternoon, I come home to Dijon, my female crested laying in the cage, of course not in the cup of vermaculite I provided but under the rock water dish.
I have a few questions, seeing as how I have very little info on how to hatch an egg. I read in a previous post that the egg could be incubated in 50/50 water and vermaculite at room temperature, unfortunately its been hot out here in California and its usually in the low 70s in the house by the time I get home from work at 8:30, will this tempertaure work still? Also, my female seems a bit upset that I took the egg out, should I put it back? would it be okay in the cage with crickets? I dont think so, but then I dont have a clue. Right now I have the egg in a 50/50 water vermaculite mix in a small glad container with the lid on. Does it need holes or should leave it open all the way?????
Any info would be a huge help.

first thing I would do is redo your incubation medium, you want it 1:1 vermiculite to water by WEIGHT not by volume ( as I'm sure that's probably how you have it) if you dit by volume it will be way too wet, and will definitely make the egg go bad ( if the egg is fertile to begin with).
poke a small hole or two in the container, and check the moisture of the medium once or twice a week and add a little bit of watre if you feel that it is too dry. your temps will be fine, they will hatch if kept between 60-85 degrees, with mid to lower 70's being optimal in my opinion. I've had crested eggs get over 90 degrees and still hatch, so you should have a problem keeping them at room temp. The larger container you use for incubating the egg the better, as you won't have to worry about the medium drying out as fast. I would suggest a 16 oz. deli cup at minimum, even if it's only for 1 egg. Let me know if you have anymore questions, and good luck!
