Could an egg from a dead cham be OK?

jleahl Jun 22, 2006 10:32 AM

So my brevicaudata died unexpectedly yesterday, and I did a post-mortem, and she did have an egg inside. She had laid the first one about two weeks ago. We had only had her a few days when she laid the first, and were told she was a male. Could the second egg POSSIBLY be fertile or alive? I went ahead and put it in the vermiculite with the first, but if it's just going to mold I don't want to risk the first one. I'm pretty bummed...

I'm sorry for your loss. If the eggs are removed quickly, they may well be fertile. Often times, large clutches of eggs are removed and successfully hatched post mortem. If they do hatch, it'll be a nice way to carry on the legasy of your poor, lost chamy. Good luck.

I'm sorry you lost the little brev.

As for the survival of the egg...its possible, as Spiddy said. The only thing is that it won't have the natural antibacterial coating that is on eggs laid by the female.

Thanks for caring...

Yeah, I read about the anti-bacterial coating somewhere and wondered about that. I checked the eggs today and that one is awfully yellowish. The other one is pretty white, with some brown spots that I think were from the leaf litter she laid it in. I guess I'll leave them both until it's obvious one/both aren't viable.

I really liked the little cham...I hope she left me a baby.

I hope she left you a baby too.
