Glass panel as a base?

jmartin104 Jun 22, 2006 11:26 AM

Has anyone tried using a glass panel with colored paper underneath instead of colored plexiglass?

Do you mean as a place to photograph animals?

That would work and give you a variety of "substrates", but I would worry about reflections off the glass and I suspect you might be able to see the glass in the photo, if you chose a high point of view.

Yes. For a base.

I'm still not clear as to what you mean by a "base". I have been photographing animals in studio setups for over 20 years and have never heard the term used this way, so pardon my confusion.

If you are going to set the animals directly on the glass, then my previous posts applies.

If you are going to put substrate, etc. on the glass (using it as a "base" for you mini-studio) then I would worry about scratching/breaking the glass. Of course, if you are doing this, I can't see why you would want glass, so I guess it is the first method.

That's correct. So what would you call it so next time I use the proper terminology.

I don't know that there is "proper" terminology?

In all honesty, I'm not sure what I would have called it in your situation. I might have simply said "I'm thinking of photographing some snakes sitting on glass". Of course, that isn't really much clearer.

Enough semantics...I want to see how it turns out! Post some pics

Did not turn out like I expected, but I used a piece of glass on white paper. I'm going to try a different color later.

It looks OK, but as you see the white is reflecting light up onto the underside of the snake. I think if you use any color, you may end up with reflected color casts on the snake. Maybe gray or black might be best?
