Thistle seed OK as substrate

dpdesign Jun 22, 2006 01:53 PM

can you use thistle seed as a substrate? I know you can use millet, but I saw a 10-lb bag of black thistle at Walmart for 10 bucks. It would certainly look nice, with it's nice rich texture. Is it OK for the uro though?

I have used nyger seed as a substrate for a year & a half. I seem to recall a while back on another forum one user expressed concern about consumption of 'oil seeds'.
To be on the safe side, I minimize the chances that they eat the seed. My ornates do not go out of their way to eat the seed, and I feed on a stone platform. If your uros eat a lot of seed with their dinner, you should look into this 'oil seed' issue before making a decision.
I like the look of the nyger seed. it's sleek and fits my modern sensibility & furnishings. I have never had any problems with bugs or sprouting. because the seeds are rice-shaped, my uros feet sing into it less than with the ball-shaped millet seed.
