Just wondering if anyone uses cypress mulch. I like the look and the price.
Just didn't know if I needed to do anything to sanitize it...i got it from home depot for $2 a bag. Thanks.

I use it from time to time with no ill effects.
I don't use the colored type however.
On another note I actually do not like the rape of the cypress swamps just for mulch, but as I said, I do occasionally use it.
Go figure.

As you said, cypress mulch works fine. I've used it for years. However, i just found out not long ago that yes, the cypress swamps are being denuded for just this purpose, and that its become quite a problem, so i've stopped using it.
Local hardwood mulch is my new choice. It's not as pretty, but it works well.

...and I think to myself, "What a wonderful world."
I've been to home depot, lowes, green thumb nursery, etc. I have never been able to find cypress mulch. You state that you purchased some from home depot. What brand, what size bag, etc.
I'm in So. Cal. so my problem finding this product may be due to low demand for this product in my area.
Thanks
It was a generic looking bag. White bag, maroon lettering that said "Natural Cypress Mulch" It was a HUGE bag for $2.50..I got 2 and that should last quite a while. I live in Ohio, so that might have something to do with it...closer to the source, though not real close. I do know that local demand seems to have a lot to do with it...some of the smaller greenhouses didn't carry it and told me lowes or Home Depot would have it.
Cypress trees only grow on the eastcoast, so Cypress mulch is hard to come by on the west coast. I have seen it on the west coast, but it's usually more expensive and harder to find.

i used with no ill effects either just find it harder to find Pooop, and is less absorbent than aspen.C
ps and as Mark stated they are rapeing swamplands to harvest it.
I use it all the time with no problems. Though you may want to get a tarp to lay out the mulch you are going to use in the sun. This will chase all the bugs out. When I say bugs I mean palmetto bug or the famous Florida roaches. LOL They are huge and most women have a objection to having them in the house.

Well I suppose that any type of logging destroys habitat, whether it be for aspen, pine, cedar, whatever.... I use aspen. We always have to keep the big picture in mind, and maybe tread a little more lightly on earth.
Here's some critters that live in the cypress swamps.
Cypress Swamp Herps
One diference is that most other trees are planted/farmed/controlled in some way. The cypress are many times virgin forest and swamp areas "cleared"..............
To make way for??? why, stores that sell cypress mulch,
of course.....
