What is the best method for calming down a nippy snake? This is a WC yearling rat snake.

some snakes wont calm down, but rat snakes usually will with some handling. handle several times a week and he'll get used to it.

Keep the handling sessions fairly short to begin with, but whatever you do, don't put the snake away just because it starts biting or he'll learn that that's the way to get you to go away (which is all he wants).

A pair of latex gloves, like the cheap ones that you might find in a hospital setting or on a janitor's cart, can help at first. Especially if the snake's nippiness is causing you to hesitate & pull back. You will approach the snake with more confidence (which is very good) and when the snake bites you...supposedly the taste is unpleasant. You can then graduate to just ONE glove (the hand you reach to pick the snake up with) and eventually none. Duffy

wear an old tshirt throughout the day and night for 2 -3 days (sleep, work, play, etc) in it. then put it into the snake's tank and leave it alone for a week. it will turn your shirt into a hide and get used to your scent. after that you should be able to handle easier and more often.

That sounds like a good idea!
I would avoid deoderant/perfume as it may irritate the snake.
coworkers/spouse/etc may not appreciate that though.

the use of said deodorant is okay. but it is best to do it on the weekend or when ever you have a couple days off. if you work throughout the week, you can also just put the same shirt back on when you get home and wear it around the house and to sleep in.
