What happens to the colours?

anafranil Jun 23, 2006 12:20 PM

My veiled lost his coulors when I moved him to a new larger cage.To cut a long story short I covered the cage with a sheet as I was told and since then he is recovering. He started eating properly and his colours started to come back.Very very very slowly though but steady.I was told by few that this usually takes a lot of time but does anyone know why this occures?
I have seen him while sleeping a few minutes ago and he had the most beautiful colours I've ever seen on a veiled, such a pitty.
Only while sleeping....

Chams use color to broadcast their mood, reproductive state, health, and dominance. When you moved your cham to a new space he was intimidated and unsure whether there was another cham lurking somewhere. He turned dull colors partially to show any other chams in the area that he was not competing for their turf. When he is certain that he's the dominant cham in the new space he should color up to display to stake out his territory. How old is he? Veileds often go through a brownish phase at about 6-8 months.

Good answer by Carlton. One of my juvenile Panther boys dropped his colors last year and he is just now beginning to get them back. His cage is in the first bedroom. I realized one day while I was cleaning his cage that he could see a much older more dominant male Panther in the middle bedroom by looking in a mirror.
