Protected Species Question

WayneAmerica Jun 23, 2006 01:08 PM

My son caught what we thought was a Prairie Kingsnake, however, I now think it might be a Eastern or Western Fox Snake. I apologize, I literally just got my new camera before going to work this morning, I will post a picture later. I saw somebody on this forum commenting on the "protected" nature of this species, in Michigan. My admittedly limited checking on the internet found that they are also protected in Iowa. Does anyone have an idea whether they are also protected in Nebraska? I would appreciate any help. I really don't want to let him go, although I will if need be... he's about 2 1/2 feet long, just shed, eats like a pig, and is tame as can be! Really a great addition.

Thanks!

Todd

This link (below) is to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commision and lists the endangered non-game species (such as snakes). The only reptile on the list is the Massasauga (a rattlesnake). You'll have to check the rest of the regulations (or contact them) to find out what the state requires in the way of hunting or fishing permits and bag limits for non-endangered non-game animals. I hope it works out for you. Fox snakes are fun.
