Won't Eat

omerfriedman Jun 23, 2006 05:22 PM

I have a roughly year old (2-3 feet long) dumerils and it usually is a great eater. This past week has been really hot and i just turned off his heat lamp cause it was getting too hot. i had tried to feed him these past few days with little success. could it be because of the heat?

It could be from the heat, my dumerils prefer it cooler than most boas = 82-84. The snake could also be simply not hungry or possibly going into a shedding cycle. Also it's always a good idea to closely examine any non-feeding snakes mouth to make sure they didn't some how injure it, if it did and caught early most mouth problems are corrected easily with simple irrigation w/ diluted betadine solution rinses. Hope this helps.

He's a really good eater, he's eaten before sheds before. However, he just finished shedding, so I dont think thats the problem. His mouth also looks fine. Whenever I give him a baby rat (a bit smaller than what he's used to) he pulls back as if he's a bit scared of it. Thanks for the help

it isnt uncommon for a dum to go off feed for a week or two. just try again next week.

I tried feeding him again after a few days off and this time he snapped at the baby rat a few times as in self defense. it definitely wasn't an eat-attack. it was strange, he seemed quite freaked out. so you're saying i should just let him go for a while and then try later? he shed about a week ago and ate almost three weeks ago.
