RETF and water confusion

happytreefrog Jun 24, 2006 08:55 AM

I've had two baby RETFs for about a mounth now, and they seem fine. I've done all the reserch and keep the best tank conditions as possible, so here's the problem: I have ben using distilled water (because it is chloren and chemical free) but I recently read a link that said: "why tree frogs and distilled water don't mix." But the link was broken!! Is this true? Only the best for my frogs!
- by the whay, everybody else see the new exto terra 18x18x24 tall terrerium, I thought the 18x18x18 was too short, but now I might get one.

i am not positive if this is correct.. but i believe i read somewhere (maybe reptiles magazine?) that you shouldnt use distilled water because it is essentially too pure.. that there are no minerals or anything in it to prevent absorbtion by the frogs skin, so they can possibly get water intoxication... again.. im not sure if it is correct, but im pretty sure it was something to that effect anyway... they suggested using drinking water or spring water because neither contain chlorine or chloramines but still have some of the minerals and such that are found in natural water sources to prevent overabsorbtion...

happy..
It is not true at all. The whole arguement came from a low budget project done at IU on Axolotl, where the found evidence that distilled water wasn't absorbed efficiently because of the lack of sodium content in the water. No hard evidence was found, and no other animals have ever been checked. I personally have had 1000's of tree frogs pass through my house right now I have a breeding group of 11 RETF's.. and use nothing but distilled water and always have distilled or R/O (which is even closer to pure H2O).

It is basically a case where 1 reference says no, and 1000's say it is ok..

If you are really worried about, you can use spring water.. it is basically tap water without the chlorine or chloramine in it.
