Cypress Mulch in So. Cal., where?

John Q Jun 24, 2006 09:11 AM

I live just outside of the San Fernando valley. I've been to the local Home Depot, Lowes, Green Thumb nursery, etc. No cypress mulch. At least nothing that is clearly marked as cypress mulch. If you live in my area and are using cypress mulch, where are you getting it? Also, is it bug free or do you have to do some sort of bug removal?

i think i've figured it out! actually ProExotics spelled it out for me. cypress mulch is available at lowes and home depot in the southeast, where cypress is readily available. i guess it would'nt be profitable for these superstores to ship across the country. just a theory. check out proexotics ad in cage supplies.

John-
Here in Illinois, you can buy Cypress everywhere. Even the gas stations have it stacked up by the semi load. Everywhere we go we see signs "4 bags/$9.99".

I used it for a while. But got tired of the little bugs and stuff. Nothing that would hurt the animals. Mostly just random nats. Plus, I don't trust my eggs on that stuff. I switched to the white soft stuff. And love it. It's expensive, but spot cleaning is a breaze. And in the long run, it seems to last just about as long.

the stuff i bought from lowes is called Cypress Rose. there are no listings on the bag saying that it's 100% cypress. i emailed the manufacturer, and asked if it was pure cypress. they told me it was about 60% cypress mixed with other hardwoods( whatever that means). i'm guessing the stuff at the gas station isn't 100% pure cypress. cypress, so i'm told, repells insects. maybe your gnats are coming from those other hardwoods? what do you think? i'm still unsure, so my balls are all still reading the sunday paper.

If memory serves. It said "100% Golden Cypress Mulch" on the bag. I will double check because I am picking some up tomorrow, for my yard.
The gnats or whatever they were, didn't bother me too much. They were very few. But the thought of any insect at all, made me decide to start using paper. I used the brown dimple craft paper from Uline. I like that stuff and still use it for my smaller tubs. However, it actually glued itself to the tub when it was wet with waste. So now I use the white bedding. I like it a lot.
