Spider het pied or bumble bee?

BChambers Jun 24, 2006 11:22 AM

Here's a question for all you breeders-i have a young female spider which will be ready to breed this coming season. Should i mate her to my Pastel male or my pied male? I had pretty much decided to use the pastel until I saw how awesom the pied spider looked! What would you all do?

bringing the total to three Spider Piebalds (all white), there may be more than that though.

Something to do with the high white spider gene people think? I talked to someone I respect in this business who has been around a long time about it. This person had allot of first hand info on all three spider pieds big time.. I don't know but it is a bummer to me. I think the crosses are going to look better with 50% white or less. Like Ralph's Dreasicles. If everthing is highwhite they are going to be the same and the buying public might not like that. I know I would prefer lower white crosses. Like in an axanthic or caramel and so on.. Nice snake either way. Like I said before codoms are really unpredictable. Don't get me wrong it is an awesome animal and Steve is doing well with the pieds. Good for him. Shake it up Steve. That is what it is all about.. I have allot of clutches from lesser platty/mojave Lucy to normal and we will see on those.. I would like to dedicate the first 4 clutches to Randy Middleton and his theories. He deserves it.. Rock on Randy..

Certainly predictions can be difficult and I've been wrong plenty but I wouldn't expect the axanthic or caramel pieds to be extremely high white. Of course hind sight is 20/20 and I hadn't really even thought about the spider pied but now it makes since that a reduced pattern white belly snake would have made a high white pied. Maybe pattern starts on the top of the back and works it's way down and both spider and pied impede that progress so spider and pied together stop it at the head? Wonder what the spider het pieds looked like, maybe you don't even need a homozygous pied to reliably kick that project off. Perhaps axanthic has a bit of a pattern element to it but I really think of both axanthic and caramel as more of color mutations so I would not expect either to change the average amount of pied area in the pied combo. Maybe woma or pinstripe or even genetic stripe would make high white pieds like spider. Interesting that white belly pastel didn't seem to increase the white in pied (has there been more than one yet?) but in some cases the double hets (pastel het pied) seem to show interaction between the pied and pastel genes.

I would rather buy one reasonably now that I know they all are going to look the same if that is the case. I know Ralph is in that project and I am sure a few others got it going on in a big way. Let me tell you something. When morphs ae variable like Clowns or something it adds excitment. Everyone says I want that one. I have never seen a morph that they all look the same. Kind of like clones. I am not taking anything any from the animal. Each animal has traits that mke them special and unique. This happens to be a completely unexpected one. What do we expect with codoms.. I told you before you can't predict predict them.. We all had an idea what it would look like. It is the whigh white that is throwing everybody. Pretty cool stuff.

You know. The pied is really the most variable of them all. I mean from a look stand point. 10% white looks totally different from 95% white and everywhere in between. It is just so strange that it would all be high white? It is what it is though as everything else with these codoms.
