Ankara (AFP): A frantic search was under way today for a python missing from the Ankara Zoo, even as a cabinet minister suggested the snake may already have passed through a kebab merchant's meat grinder.
The six-metre-long, 70kg python has been missing since June 10, but the zoo management only alerted authorities on Monday, triggering a criminal investigation, newspapers reported.
"I am responsible for the protection of animal rights .... My biggest concern is the possibility that the python might have become shish-kebab," Environment Minister Osman Pepe was quoted as saying by the mass-circulation daily Hurriyet.
"I advise citizens not to eat shish kebab until the python is found," he said, presumably tongue-in-cheek.
Agriculture Minister Mehdi Eker, whose ministry is responsible for the zoo, said the snake may have been stolen with inside help.
One of three security guards questioned by police yesterday said he opened the hole used to feed the python because the snake seemed to be "in discomfort," the Anatolia news agency said, and walked away without shutting it.
The zoo has been closed to visitors.
Mr Eker sought to calm residents.
"The python is not poisonous," he said.
"Moreover, it only eats mice and rabbits."

Tarım ve Köyişleri Bakanı Mehdi Eker, pitonun kaybolduğu alanın ziyarete kapatılarak arama yapıldığını belirtti. Çevre ve Orman Bakanı Osman Pepe de 'Piton bulunana kadar şiş kebap yemeyin' esprisi yaptı. Bu arada Kaybolan piton ile ilgili güvenlik görevlileri E.O, G.Ö. ve Ü.B. gözaltına alındı. Ü.B., olay gecesi yılanın kafesine yaklaştığını, pitonu çok huzursuz gördüğü için beslenme kapağını açtığını, yılanın bu sırada kendisine doğru gelmesinden dolayı kapağı kapatamadığını söylediği öğrenildi. Güvenlikçiler serbest bırakıldı.
