Baby cresteds keep dying

seboba17 Jun 24, 2006 02:09 PM

My crested eggs keep molding over and wrinkling. When I cut them open, I find fully formed dead baby cresteds. What would cause this!? It keeps happening, only the first two eggs of the whole years clutch hatched.

Many factors can cause in egg deaths of geckos. Genetic defects, too hot in the incubator, too dry, too moist, female not getting all the nutrition she needs, just plain bad luck. The female could be too young or too old as well, to breed.

THough very frustrating to have alot of deaths of babies in the egg, not much you can do, other than ensure those things you can affect (ie nutrician, incubation temps etc) are ideal. My suggestion is take her out of the breeding cycle for the rest of the year and after a long rest to regain her strength etc, try again next season. Her eggs may be better then.

I am guessing that your media is too wet.
I have hatched 75 out of 78 eggs this year with my eggs in a vermiculite mixture that I keep moist enough i can squeeze water out of it i take a pinch of it. Barely damp I would call it.
