P.cinereus is very common and abundant in the forest habitats near and within the Washington metropolitan area. However, this time of year these salamanders retreat well below ground level to escape the heat. The best time to find cinereus is in the spring and fall where they prefer semi-moist areas and are most often found under rotting logs.

They will be hard to find this time of year but are fairly common around mid spring under logs in wettish areas...This picture was taken this spring at Huntley Meadows park off of Route 1 in Alexandria...
