Flagyl Dosing

vegasbilly Jun 24, 2006 08:09 PM

I need some help on dosing some ETBs w/Flagyl. I lost my little "handbook" and haven't had to treat any snakes in years so I'm a little rusty in my recollections. The Flagyl is in suspension form at 250mg/5ml.

1)how does ml equate to cc's?
2)amt. to use per increment of body weight?
3)dosing frequency?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Bill

Well, I've never used the compound so am as interested as to #'s 2 & 3. Also, add # 4, Is there any other or better Rx for shotguning internal parasites in reptiles?
As to #l: ml's and cc's are equivelant measures, I recall.
How are your emmies doing Bill?

They're doing pretty well, thanks for asking. The 1.1 adults that had the UR issues pulled through nicely - dosed them w/Cipro, cranked the heat and humidity, and both fed after about 5 weeks. I think Flagyl is the "best", certainly the most forgiving as far as toxicity goes. I thought cc's and ml's were the same but thanks for reinforcing it.

The adults and one sub-adult have never been treated and I don't want it to become an issue down-the-road. When establishing my Red Tailed Green Rats back in the day Flagyl and I got well acquainted but like I said, my recall is a bit hazy! Hopefully someone w/the info will take the time to respond!

Bill-
I have used Flagyl susp. 500mg.5mg on a few of my wild caught etb's. This should be half strength of the suspension you are using. The dosage I have used is 50 mg. Flagyl per kg. of snake. The Flagyl was injected into a rat, the second dose 14 days later, total of two doses. Fecals tested clean after two doses. And as far as I know 1cc=1ml=1mg. I hope this is helpful-

Thanks for taking the time to respond! Ok, I'm confused! At 500mg/5ml are you saying I should double the dosage as mine is formulated at 250mg/ml? - you stated mine was "twice" what you used but I'm thinking mine is 1/2 the strength.

Thanks again for the response.

Sorry about the confusion, I'm now confusing myself.
My suspension pack is 100mL weight, total Metronidazole = 500mg(5mg/mL) suspension strength or 5mg Metronidazole per mL of suspension. Is your pack Metronidazole USP 250 mg (5 mg/mL) at a total weight of 50mL? This would be the same strength as I am using. At this strength the dose was 50 mg per kg of snake. I hope this clears it up.

Flagyl (metrodonazole) comes in many consentrations, or you can mix any consentration you want. 1cc always = ml. no matter what you mix. The important thing is how many milligrams you want to give per dose. Then figure out how many ml's to give your snake.
