YEARLING IN OUTDOOR GARDEN ENCLOSURE?

JEREMYLTOWN Jun 25, 2006 09:10 AM

My yearling is maybe 3 inches. Is it safe to put him/her in an outdoor pen bordering my tomato vegatable garden? Are tomato plants poisonous to them?I know that South and East facing enclosures are best because morning sun helps to warm them quicker but it has never gotten under 70 degrees in this house. Outside here in Eastern PA the temps can still drop into the 60's.Also,the rocks I lift for worms sometimes have ant colonies under them.Should I just wait until next summer so he will be big enough to be protected from an ant attack? He is currently in a 20L with moistened bed-a-beast substrate 2in deep, water dish clay pot,cave,Reti-Sun 5 light and ceramic 100w heat lamp only used during colder months.I feed him mostly Reptomin sticks and sometimes mix worms with fruits and veggies now that he is a yr old.He is very healthy and has doubled in size since I aquired him in October.Feeding would seem difficult for me to do in an outdoor setup as he likes to hide most of the day. Thanks for your useful input for the well being of all turtles.

I would say yes, go ahead, provided that the pen has a lid of some sort. The pen needs to be predator proof!
Access to real sunlight, and having the opportunity to do a little foraging will be good for your little one, in my opinion.

I think the leaves of the tomatoe plants are posinous to box turtle, the tamatoes are not but the leaves are. I would try and fence off the leaves, or keep it out of reach of your turltes.

Can anyone verify that poisonous tomato leaf thing? I just planted a grape tomato plant in my enclosure...
