Tiny baby snake...need help to ID it

kredfish Jun 25, 2006 10:37 AM

OK...never saw a snake this small. I am in Baton Rouge, LA and found it on my driveway near the edge of my grass. It only measures 6 inches at best. Coloring looks light brown with black spots in a syncopated pattern down its back. Head is oval with a light or white band around the back of it. It is the size of a worm! Tongue does dart out and is forked.

Any help IDing it or instructions on how to care for it would be greatly appreciated. I assume at this size it eats insects?

I can take a picture of it and e-mail it to anyone who can really help!

Thanks! kredfish@cox.net

Yeah, that sounds like a young gbrown snake. They eat slugs and snails. Can be hard to keep. Much better to release it. They are great to have in the garden, though. They keep the damaging slugs away.

I agree that it's a young Storeria. ~~Greg~~

It was probably a blind snake.
