Compatible fish?

bellacrest Jun 25, 2006 03:53 PM

My friend has 2.5-3 in. red ear sliders. They are rather....aggressive.....and overly hyper....to put it nicely. o_o; Well she has an algae problem in her tank right now and she doesn't really want gravel. She does have a filter. Does anyone know of an algae eating fish/creature that won't get its appendages ripped from its body? It is a 10 gallon tank. Thank you.

Honestly, there is no fish that is safe around a turtle.

I suggest a good cleaning and perhaps some type of algea killer chemical? are they any good pet shops that KNOW about turtles?

The only time I had an alge problem was when I keep plants in my water. Is she treating the water with a chemical like Repti-safe?

I would honestly move the turtles to a LARGER tank and add a better filter system.

Hi.

I'm the "friend" mentioned in the first post. You see, I have a 25ish 30 gallon tank that I am planning to transfer my turtles to. However, because of my algea problem...I can't because it is already hard enough to clean my 10 gallon one (including hauling the water filled thing downstairs etc). My friend suggested gravel. Does anyone have any experience with the filteration that provides? I don't use any chemicals with my turtles because no matter how safe the label claims the product to be, how safe can something that kills all the algea and stuff be?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions on filteration? I have a power filter that works quite effectively on cleaning the water, but doesn't do anything about the green stuff. It's currently in a plastic container and actually in with the turtles because the water level isn't that high. LMAO XP. Suggestions on inexpensive and effective filters?

Thanx!

DO NOT USE GRAVEL.

let me repeat that......
DO NOT USE GRAVEL!!
youre turtles will taste he gravel and eat it and it will KILL them.
what i would do is maybe try an under gravel filter, but instead of gravel use large river rocks that they turtles cant eat. use the under gravel filter plus an on the side filter and you should be good.
the reason youa re getting so much algae too, is cfause youre not changing your water enough and is your tank near a window? that usually affects it too.

I had a friend in California who owned turtles. His tank had gravel so.....are you talking about flavored gravel?

Let's clearify. My tank is very close to a window...but i guess my turtles like being able to see where they are going. And I don't have another ideal location for them. Is there any kind of filter that would help this situation? I'm getting a new one soon so I'll take suggestions. only condition is that it can't be too expensive (like under $50). i think small gravel will be a very very bad idea now, my turtles eat everything....yea. help!!!! ack.

The Aquaclear 110 is in my opinion the best bang for the buck in a filter. Although a large out of the tank canister filter would be even better, they are also much more expensive. I'd also suggest buying extra foam filters and using just foam media, switching one at a time after the bacteria starts to build up.
