FL Press: Local snake may set record

Jun 25, 2006 06:29 PM

WBBH (Fort Myers, Florida) 25 June 06 Local snake may set world record
Immokalee: Stretching more than 20 feet long and weighing more than 300 pounds southwest Florida has a snake that could slither in to the record books.
‘Muffy’, the 22 and a quarter foot Burmese python is likely the largest python on display in southwest Florida and maybe the world.
Captain Bob of the Everglades Day Safari bought the captive born beast about two months ago for $3,000.
His goal isn’t so much the record, but the history books.
“It’s educational for people to see just what can happen to a little pet snake,” said Captain Bob.
Tom Crutchfield is a reptile dealer, handler and a herpetologist. He says pythons have become a popular exotic pet over the years but often get too big for the pet owners to handle.
As a result reptiles are often dumped into nature preserves like the everglades. While they can pose a threat to native wildlife Crutchfield says the far bigger threat is to people.
“Anyone who buys a snake that can literally kill you should at least be an adult and know what they’re doing,” said Crutchfield.
One thing to remember is now there is one big beast on display, her name is ‘Muffy’

Speaking of the record, is there anybody who knows for sure whether or not Baby died? A lot of people say yes or no, but nobody seems to know for sure.
