strange spots

jloganafcc Jun 26, 2006 12:10 AM

tonight i was examining one of my brazilians, and on a few random belly scales i noticed some spots between the scutes. my first impression was "OHNO MITES!" which would be really weird, seeing as i have not had them in almsot 2 years, and that i have never noticed them on any other animals.

well i took the snake into the light, and the spots are small, way small. i had to take the eye peice of my microscope to actualyl get a good look at them, and i saw that they were liek small rust spots unter the edge of the scale, the clear part that would almost be the edge of a finger nail, if you get my visual. they werent moving, the scale i not malformed or anything.

what could this be? a fungal infection? again odd, because i keep all my rainbows the same way and have never seen this before. this animal shed about a week and a half ago, is in awsome health, never sits in dirty anything. i keeep them all on newspaper. way warm enough.
any ideas on what this is, its treatment, or its possible harm to my snake?

would a topical antibiotic work?

thanks

Maybe very small specks of newsprint? When I keep my snakes on newspaper I always have dark smudges on my hands after changing out all the paper.

thats what i want to think, that its just some ink.

im not sure what else it could be. i keep all my animals like crazy clean.

i put him in a betadine solution for 15 min just to be safe.

ever have any experience with fungal or bacterial infections?

Not sure if it might be bacterial or fungal but it probably would not hurt to alternate every other day with a smear of triple antibiotic cream one day and OTC topical antifungal cream the next day.
